Cantons of Puntarenas

The first canton of the province Puntarenas is also called Puntarenas. This canton covers an area of about 1,842 km² or 711.2 square miles, and has a population of close to 109,790 and a population density of about 60/km2 or 154.4/square miles. The capital city of this canton is also called Puntarenas and it is also the capital city of the entire province. The canton of Puntarenas was created by a decree dated 7 December 1848 and is home to 16 districts.

The second canton of the province Puntarenas is called Esparza. This canton covers an area of about 216.8 km² or 83.7 square miles, and has a population of close to 25,510 and a population density of about 118/km2 or 304.8/square miles. The capital city of this canton is also called Esparza. The canton of Esparza was created by a decree dated December 7, 1848 and is home to 5 districts.

The third canton of the province Puntarenas is called Buenos Aires. This canton covers an area of about 2,384.2km² or 920.5 square miles, and has a population of close to 43,530 and a population density of about 18.3/km2 or /square miles. The capital city of this canton is also called Buenos Aires. The canton of Buenos Aires was created by a decree dated July 29, 1940 and is home to 9 districts.

The fourth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Montes de Oro. This canton covers an area of about 244.7 km² or 94.5 square miles, and has a population of close to 11,820 and a population density of about 48/km2 or 47.3/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called Miramar. The canton of Montes de Oro was created by a decree dated July 17, 1915 and is home to only 3 districts.

The fifth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Osa. This canton covers an area of about 1,930 km² or 745.2 square miles, and has a population of close to 27,600 and a population density of about 14/km2 or 37/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called Ciudad Cortés. The canton of Osa was created by a decree dated July 29, 1940 and is home to only 5 districts.

The sixth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Aguirre. This canton covers an area of about 543.7 km² or 210 square miles, and has a population of close to 21,715 and a population density of about 40/km2 or 103.4/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called Quepos. The canton of Aguirre was created by a decree dated October 30, 1948 and is home to only 3 districts.

The seventh canton of the province Puntarenas is called Golfito. This canton covers an area of about 1,753 km² or 676.8square miles, and has a population of close to 36,400 and a population density of about 2.1/km2 or 53.8/square miles. The capital city of this canton is also called Golfito. The canton of Golfito was created by a decree dated June 10, 1949 and is home to only 4 districts.

The eighth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Coto Brus. This canton covers an area of about 994km² or 383.8 square miles, and has a population of close to 43,570 and a population density of about 44/km2 or 113.5/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called San Vito. The canton of Coto Brus was created by a decree dated December 10, 1965 and is home to only 5 districts.

The ninth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Parrita. This canton covers an area of about 478km² or 184.6 square miles, and has a population of close to 12,880 and a population density of about 27/km2 or 69.8/square miles. The capital city of this canton is also called Parrita. The canton of Parrita was created by a decree dated July 5, 197 and is not subdivided into districts; this is one of only two cantons in the entire Costa Rica that has no districts.

The tenth canton of the province Puntarenas is called Corredores. This canton covers an area of about 620.6 km² or 239.6 square miles, and has a population of close to 40,280 and a population density of about 65/km2 or 168/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called Ciudad Neily. The canton of Corredores was created by a decree dated law on October 19, 1973 and is home to only 4 districts.

The eleventh canton of the province Puntarenas is called Garabito. This canton covers an area of about 316.3 km² or 122.1 square miles, and has a population of close to 11,265 and a population density of about 18.1/km2 or 92.3/square miles. The capital city of this canton is called Jacó. The canton of Garabito was created by a decree dated September 25, 1980 and is home to only 2 districts.
